Case Study:

A History of Excellence

In summer 2003, Seattle University wanted an innovative way to communicate its history. I was director of web communication at the time and proposed an interactive solution. My idea was embraced by school administrators, and I led the effort to produce an interactive history of the university.

Challenge

Audiences for the piece included prospective students, parents, alumni and potential donors. This was challenging because each group had its own information needs and interaction preferences. The web feature needed to work on multiple levels to be successful.

Solution

I partnered with Gabe Kean of Belle & Wissell to create an interactive story that showcases the spirit and stature of the university. The new, self-contained web site is titled "A History of Excellence" and was designed to simultaneously engage audiences of all types.

Content was structured and delivered in a way that allowed viewers to interact with it on multiple levels of detail. Quick connections to SU's stories were achieved by overview pages that were quickly browseable by casual viewers. Viewers who wanted more were rewarded with extended stories and access to deeper content via the featurettes. Still more detail was made available through the use of photo enlargements and video segments. This content delivery technique is similar to the approach used in high-traffic museum exhibits.

Team

I conceived the project and managed it from start to finish. I also handled the identification and acquisition of all photo, video, and text-based assets. Gabe Kean, former lead designer at Second Story Interactive, crafted the piece, with the help of programmer Seb Chevrel, and writer/editor Joe Shepter.
